Die Installation BIG FAT CENTERPIECE beschäftigt sich mit der von Architekturen, auf Individuen wie Gruppen, ausgehenden Macht und Mechanismen der Observation.

An weitläufigen öffentlichen Orten – etwa wie der documenta Halle – entsteht eine besondere Form der Anonymität, da aufgrund der Größe des Raumes die Präsenz anderer Personen in den Hintergrund rückt. Der nonverbale Kontakt mit anderen über Mimik ist dabei durch die Distanz nur bedingt möglich. Was jedoch möglich ist: Beobachtung und Beurteilung auf Distanz – Anonymität in einem exponierten Forum.

Um sich aus dieser Situation zu lösen, kann man in die Raum-in-Raum-Installation BIG FAT CENTERPIECE eintreten – man verlässt für eine kurze Zeit diese große Halle, kommt in einen kleineren und vermeintlich sichereren Raum. Doch in der Installation selbst wirken wieder andere Gefühle, andere Normen werden aktiviert und verunmöglichen das Gefühl eines bequemen Ortes zum Ausruhen. Die Gegenüberstellung von öffentlichem und privatem Bereich wird verwischt und erzeugt ein Gefühl der höchsten Aufmerksamkeit und Selbstobservation.

What does space have to do with power?

The installation BIG FAT CENTERPIECE deals with the power and mechanisms of observation of ourselves and others emanating from architecture, on individuals and groups.

In spacious public places – such as the documenta Halle – a special form of anonymity is created, as the presence of other people is pushed into the background due to the size of the space. Non-verbal contact with others via facial expressions is only possible to a limited extent due to the distance. What is possible, however, is observation and judgement at a distance – anonymity in an exposed forum.

To break free from this situation, you can enter the room-in-room installation BIG FAT CENTERPIECE – you leave this large hall for a short time and enter a smaller and supposedly safer room. But inside the installation itself, other feelings take effect, other norms are activated and make the feeling of a comfortable place to rest impossible. The juxtaposition of public and private areas is blurred and creates a feeling of maximum attention and self-observation.
