Dorfgemeinschaftshäuser (DGH) – Ordnungsgemäß

Wie steht es um die Dorfgemeinschaftshäuser in Hessen, die einst als zentrale Orte des dörflichen Lebens für Kultur, Gemeinschaft und alltägliche Notwendigkeiten gedacht waren? Was bleibt von dieser Idee, fast 75 Jahre nach dem Hessenplan?

Seit den 1950er Jahren wurden DGHs als öffentlich finanzierte Räume für ländliche Gemeinden errichtet. Sie dienten als Treffpunkte für kulturelle Veranstaltungen, Versammlungen und Feste, boten aber auch praktische Funktionen wie Waschküchen oder Kühlräume. Heute stellt sich die Frage: Welche Bedeutung haben sie noch? Werden sie weiterhin genutzt, und wenn ja, in welcher Form? Wie hat sich ihre Funktion verändert?

Unser Forschungsprojekt im Rahmen des PLURALE Festivals 2025 untersucht den aktuellen Stellenwert der DGHs und ihre Rolle im dörflichen Leben.

What is the current state of the village community centers in Hesse, which were once intended as central places of village life for culture, community, and everyday necessities? And what remains of this idea almost 75 years after the Hessen Plan?

DGHs have been built as publicly funded spaces for rural communities since the 1950s. They served as meeting places for cultural events, gatherings and celebrations, but also offered practical functions such as laundry rooms or cold stores. Today, the question arises: What significance do they still have? Are they still used, and if so, in what form? How has their function changed?

Our research project as part of the PLURALE Festival 2025 is investigating the current significance of the DGHs and their role in village life.
