Writing on the Wall

Writing on the Wall ist eine Serie von Interventionen, die sich ein vertrautes Instrument der musealen Kunstvermittlung aneignet – das Wandschild.

Mit ihrer einheitlichen schwarzen Schrift auf weißem Karton sind Wandschilder so gestaltet, dass sie unauffällig und neutral wirken und scheinbar wesentliche Informationen über das ausgestellte Objekt liefern. Doch sind Schilder wirklich vertrauenswürdig?

Die für die PLURALE von Kora Riecken und Silas Edwards verfassten Schilder sind es jedenfalls nicht. Indem sie sich Skandale, Klatsch und Marginalien zunutze machen, haben die Künstler:innen die Wände der documenta Halle mit unerwarteten und irreführenden Informationen versehen. Dabei verschwimmen Fiktion und Fakt – und die Schilder drohen, selbst zu Kunstwerken zu werden.

Writing on the Wall is a series of interventions which hijack a familiar tool of museums and art galleries: the label.

With their uniform black type on white card, labels are designed to seem inconspicuous and neutral, providing apparently essential facts about the exhibit at hand. But can labels really be trusted?

The labels written by Kora Riecken and Silas Edwards for the exhibition Plurale certainly can not. Drawing on scandal, petty gossip and marginalia, the artists have annotated the walls of the Documenta Halle with all kinds of unexpected and misleading information. In the process, fictions replace facts and art labels risk turning into artworks.
